Training Your Puppy to Stop Excessive Barking, Howling and Whining

Give proper attention

First of all we should know that when you bring a new Puppy or dog to your house he needs constant attention. When we fail to give them the needed attention they start whining or howling to catch our attention. As baby starts to cry when they need their mother’s attention the puppies do whine or howl and they know that somebody will come near them to see what is happening. If we do not do something to stop this it will become a routine habit and will frustrate and annoy us.

Good Companion

The whining or howling may have several reasons before it become a habit. One must know and understand the needs of the Puppy when we first bring to him to the household. If you have limited his movement to a Crate or a small room and when he starts whining immediately take him outside to the designated toilet area and see if he needs to eliminate. There may be many other physical needs like he is hungry, thirsty, feeling too hot or too cold, being sick, or may be their toy with which they are playing got lost or struck under the furniture. First try and make them comfortable. Then try and give them water or food and wait for some time and if he start eating or drinking then we will know for what he has started whining or howling. If it does not work try and give him his usual toy to play with. If you find them whining at the outer door it may be because he has seen his usual companion outside and he want them to come in and play with him. If you learn that he had whine or howl for a particular reason make them understand that the habit is unacceptable and do not give them the usual reward for their good habits.

Pre-Determined Schedule

Once you learn that the whining or howling for an apparent reason you must fallow the schedule of housebreaking, feeding etc. at a regular time and to make them feel that you are taking care of their needs. We must also avoid leaving a puppy unattended for a long time and make them feel abandoned. Do not give them any form of reward if they whine. Do shout at them and show your unhappiness if the whine or howl. You must avoid scolding them for wining if it is for their physical needs and instead help them overcome his problem.

Teach him to live alone

We must also teach them to accept separation as we cannot be constantly at their side. You should start this by leaving them alone for some time while you are in. Do not give them any sort of attention. This should be done only after their physical needs are met. Do not always keep them confined to their crates. When he gets accustomed to the routines leave them freely to roam around and play. Give them some sorts of toys, Frisbee etc. and teach them to play alone. This will them overcome their anxiety of being left alone. Do not leave them alone confined to their Crates. Familiarize your household to them and teach them where to go for their toilet when alone in the house. Always spend some time with home when you come back and reward them if they have maintained the place clean. Always give them a fair amount of comfort for their sleep. If their needs are met, they are loved and their master will not tolerate whining and howling they will become silent and happy and obedient companion for you.
